You will be trekking in the
Annapurna area which lies north of the lakeside city of Pokhara in
central Nepal. It is dominated by the Annapurna Himalayan range which
includes Mt. Annapurna I (8091m). Trekking here is very popular because
of its terrific mountain and village scenery.
As you leave Pokhara and wind your way up terraced hillsides into
the mountains, you will be passing through bright Rhododendron forests
and charming villages perched on precarious ridge tops. The rhododendron
is Nepal's national flower. Mammals like the rhesus monkey, common
langur, yellow-throated marten and the Himalayan weasel are often
encountered on the trek.
Nepal's cultural diversity unfolds before you on the trail. You will
be walking through villages of Gurungs, Magars and Brahmins. The Gurung
and Magar communities provide most of the Gurkha soldiers who have
earned worldwide fame for their bravery. Ghandrung (1,940m) is the
secondlargest Gurung village in Nepal and consists of closely-clustered,
slate-roofed houses surrounded by neatly terraced fields. You can
get fantastic views of Mt. Annapurna South and the fish-tail side
of Machhapuchhre from here. You will also meet exotic mule trains
that are reminiscent of the ancient Tibetan trade route. From Ghorepani
you can enjoy the spectacular panorama of Dhaulagiri I (8167m, the
eighth highest mountain in the world), Nilgiri (7061m), Annapurna
I, Hiuncliuli and other summits. Poon Hill, offering the best peak
views, is the highlight of our trek. |
